ABT will now stick a rear wing on your VW Transporter

It was only a couple of weeks ago that we brought you news of German tuner ABT’s power upgrade for the recently-facelifted Volkswagen T6.1, with a new ECU boosting the top-spec 2.0-litre TDI’s output to 223bhp from the standard 196bhp.

At the time, we also learnt that ABT would offer either 19 or 20-inch wheels and a fancy Bilstein height-adjustable suspension setup that could drop your Transporter panel van, California camper or Caravelle people-carrier by anywhere between 40mm and 70mm from standard.

Now though, ABT has announced a new aero package to go along with the previous upgrades – because downforce, of course. Looking resplendent in ‘Love Island bronze’ above is a front splitter-type thing, side skirts, a rear diffuser, new exhaust tips and that wonderful stepped rear wing. Fantastic.

Apparently, all the different parts can be supplied individually and will fit either the short or long wheelbase versions of the T6.1. Plus, ABT also now offers an ECU upgrade for the lesser-powered diesel – the 148bhp iteration can be chipped to make 178bhp and 400Nm of torque.

So, what do you reckon Internet? Customising VW campers looks a little different to how it did in the 1960s, but we’re still all for it. Go forth until your heart is content…
