236,000 people want a Hyundai Ioniq 5

You lot were pretty impressed by Hyundai’s new all-electric Ioniq 5. So were a lot of people, by the sounds of things. The company has confirmed that since the car was revealed on 23 February, it’s received a whopping 236,000 “expressions of interest” from potential buyers.

And that’s just in Europe, too. Hyundai says that’s the most interest it’s had in any new car, and that the 3,000 ‘First Edition’ cars were all accounted for three times over within 24 hours of the car’s unveiling.

Remember the Ioniq 5 is the first Hyundai built on the company’s new Electric-Global Modular Platform. Teased by the 45 concept in 2019, its styling pays homage to Giugiaro-designed Pony from the Seventies. It comes in two versions with single or dual-motors and a 58 or 72.6kWh battery – 0-100kph takes as little as 5.2 seconds, while the rangiest version can travel almost 500km between charges.

The Ioniq 5 is much bigger than it looks in photos, with a three-metre wheelbase, and uses 800-volt battery tech to replenish 100km of range in just five minutes on a sufficiently meaty charger.  Click on these blue words for the full story.
