2020 Land Rover Discovery Sport now in Malaysia from RM380k

For all the BMW and Merc SUVs that have rolled onto our roads in recent years, it's easy to forget that Land Rover is arguably the original purveyor of premium off-roaders. It's something Jaguar Land Rover Malaysia is hoping to remind affluent SUV buyers with its latest launch to date: the 2020 Land Rover Discovery Sport R-Dynamic.

It's a long name for a long car. R-Dynamic refers to the sportier trim fitted as standard to the Malaysian-spec model, which is offered as a strict five-seater or a 5+2 priced at RM379,800 and RM409,800 respectively; the choice is yours. Whatever the configuration, power comes from the British marque's two-litre turbocharged Ingenium petrol mill. Its 200PS and 320Nm of twist is distributed to all four wheels via a nine-speed ZF transmission.

Correction: the Discovery Sport is not a permanent 4x4. It has something called Driveline Disconnect, which, as its name suggests, disconnects drive to the rear under "steady state cruising". Land Rover claims that in this condition, AWD can be re-engaged in just 500 milliseconds. There's also 'Terrain Response 2' which is basically the latest version of Land Rover's terrain-specific drive mode selector

The most impressive bit of kit on board the 2020 Disco Sport is the 'ClearSight Ground View' which provides drivers with a virtual view of the ground beneath the SUV's front overhang which makes driving on rockier terrain and kerb-riddled car parks a breeze. More familiar features in the Discovery Sport's spec sheet include a 10-inch high-definition touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a full-colour head-up display, wireless charger and high-speed emergency braking, among others.

Sticker prices include the "Land Rover Care" programme, which consists of a five-year/150,000km factory warranty, five-year/65,000km servicing and three years of roadside assistance.
