Upping the drone game

The much anticipated new DJI Mavic 2 series drones is here, ready to woo enthusiasts and budding drone fliers with new specifications and features.

Distributed locally by ECS ICT Berhad, it’s available in two forms, the baseline Mavic 2 Zoom and the fully loaded Mavic 2 Pro. Dubbed the most advanced DJI camera drone ever built, the Mavic 2 is presented as a powerful new platform that enables photographers and videographers to take their creative ideas even further.

Backing the claim are several improvements over the previous Mavic Pro, notably the adoption of new gimbal-stabilised cameras, advanced intelligent features like Hyperlapse and ActiveTrack, an enhanced video transmission system, and its impressive 31-minute flight time and 72kph top speed. Moreover, its improved Advanced Pilot Assistance System (APAS) enables the Mavic 2 to analyse its surroundings and automatically avoid obstacles.

Buyers of the baseline Mavic 2 Zoom will be in for a treat. DJI’s first consumer drone equipped with zoom capability lets users get closer to the subject by combining a two-times optical zoom (24-48mm) with two-times digital zoom to simulate a 96mm telephoto lens, capturing lossless videos in full HD resolution while at it. Another exciting feature is a Dolly Zoom QuickShot mode previously reserved for professional cinematographers.

Of course, the flagship Mavic 2 Pro takes things up a few more notches. Co-developed with the leading purveyors of medium format photography, Hasselblad, the Mavic 2 Pro is the world’s first drone to feature an integrated camera from the latter. Hasselblad Natural Color Solution (HNCS) technology enables it to capture aerial shots at a rate of up to 20 megapixels. It also has 4K 10-bit HDR support, meaning it can be plugged into a 4K TV for playback and in the right colour tones too.

Available through authorised dealers nationwide, the DJI Mavic 2 Zoom retails at RM5,699 and the Hasselblad-equipped Mavic 2 Pro at RM6,599. A ‘Fly More Kit’ is available at RM1,399 – an optional package that adds two batteries, a multi-battery charging hub, a car charger, a battery-to-power bank adaptor, two pairs of propellers and a carrying bag to the standard items in the box.
