Porsche has presented us with many iconic 911 models over the years, but a smaller group are more special than others. One of it would be the Carrera RS 2.7; it was introduced during the glory 70s era of motorsports and made immediate impact on circuit racing, as well as the rally courses.
For this, niche Danish watchmaker was inspired to come out with the REC 901 RS Limited Edition that incorporates parts off the Carrera 2.7 RS as well as adopting some design elements of the Porsche.
It’s not just any Carrera RS 2.7 too because as usual with REC limited edition timepieces, the story of the car is part of the product. This particular car is from 1973, with German rally driver Peter Rumpfkeil being one of the first few owners. During his 3-year ownership of the vehicle, Peter participated in several rally events including the prestigious Monte Carlo Rally in 1976 and 1977, in addition to the Lombard RAC Rally in 1976. After that, the car was sold to another Danish by the name Jorgen Schultz.
It just so happens that Timo Rumpfkeil (son of Peter) had learned of the REC 901 Collection project, and contacted REC to offer more details of the car. It turns out that the very first owner of this particular RS 2.7 was famous German racing driver Clemens Schickentanz, who had also taken it racing. In fact, many other racers had had experience taking the car racing.
REC 901 RS Limited Edition
The soft curves of the classic 911 inspires the 901’s case shape and stainless bracelet – the latter a first from the company. The dial’s inner bezel is in yellow instead of the factory car’s hero red (stripe), but there’s a reason for this: the donor car, in its rally days, were mostly in yellow (and yellow+black) so it really does pay proper homage to one specific RS 2.7.
Each and every 901 RS Limited Edition watch includes the donor car’s VIN number, as well as a ‘Story Card’ which details the history of what made it extra special. The VIN number is stamped on the side of the case while the Story Card is included in the fancy box the watch comes in.
The REC 901 RS Limited Edition is sold for RM8,159, available at Red Army Watches outlets nationwide.
*REC has made a name for themselves making watches from iconic car models. Their first attempt was with the MINI Cooper, and also the Ford Mustang.
