It’s Tanner Foust’s 900bhp drift-Passat!

It's a tough job making VW's saloon interesting. A nitrous-boosted 7.3-litre V8 will do it, mind

Volkswagen sometimes suffers a bit of flak for its range being a little strait-laced. But away from the world of MQB platform-sharing and a million Golf variants, a Formula D team has come up with a people's car people can get really, really excited about.

Take a VW Passat, a car associated with literally nothing, and shoehorn a 900bhp, nitrous boosted 7.3-litre V8 under the bonnet.

Strip it out and give it the full track trimmings inside, all sorts of clever suspension components including coilovers, and a massive rear wing. Make sure to paint it yellow and black, like a massive warning label. Then convert it to rear-wheel-drive and fit a four-speed dog-box for good measure.

Lastly, and most importantly, enter it in the world's premier motorsport category for anti-social behaviour, Formula D. And make sure you've got someone interesting to drive it.

Tanner Foust will enter this mad Passat in the 2015 Formula D season, the USA's biggest drifting series. Not only is Foust of TG stock, he's already won the title twice, taking the honours in 2007 and 2008.

"One of the things I have always loved about drifting in the United States is how inventive you can get with the car builds. You can put a high-horsepower V8 into a Volkswagen Passat to make something completely unique," says Foust of his latest drifting endeavor. He's not wrong.

The 2015 Formula D season begins on April 10th at Long Beach, California. Expect localised fog. And deafness.
