Goodyear parks their newest blimp in an inflatable hangar

Goodyear Blimp House 1

You’ve seen those Goodyear blimps, haven’t you? Probably one of the best marketing tool of any company, in our opinion. It’s majestic, eye-catching, gigantic, and is located at places (read: altitude) where it won’t be jostling for public attention with other advertisements.

Did we mention it is gigantic? Yes. That creates a problem though.

Because where does Goodyear store them?

This is when Goodyear airbases come which are located in California, Florida, and near company HQ in Ohio. But all those are permanent or rigid structures. Earlier this month, Goodyear inflated their new blimp hangar at the same California airbase in Carson. Yup, inflated it because the hangar is also the world’s largest inflatable building.

Basically, it’s blimpception.

This air-filled ‘structure’ will house Goodyear’s latest blimp Wingfoot Two, which began operating in Los Angeles in October. The hanger stretches 337 feet in length (103 metres), 135.5 wide (41.3m), and 88.5 metres in height (27m). From end-to-end, and floor-to-ceiling, the facility has a 3.0 million cubic foot capacity, which is equivalent to 50 Olympic size swimming pools. It may have nothing but air to help it stand, but it still weighs more than 16 tonnes.

Goodyear has been flying their fleet of blimps for more than 90 years. Can’t blame them, it’s such a brilliant concept even today.
