Ford hasn’t actually delivered a single unit of its much anticipated 600bhp GT yet, but even so it has decided to double the length of its production run, which now stands at four years.

With 250 cars expected each year, it should mean that there are 1,000 new GTs on the road by the time work on the assembly line has ceased.

It follows last month’s announcement that the racing programme – initially given the green light for just two seasons – would continue in both the World Endurance and IMSA WeatherTech championships until the end of 2019.

“While we can’t build enough Ford GTs for everyone who has applied, we are going to produce additional vehicles in an effort to satisfy more of our most loyal Ford ambassadors,” says Ford Performance’s global director Dave Pericak. “We want to keep Ford GT exclusive, but at the same time we know how vital this customer is to our brand.”

A grand total of 6,506 applications were received ahead of the original two-year run, with around 500 of those keen to buy in UK. Ford began informing successful candidates last month, with the first deliveries expected at the end of this year.

With more time to play with, Ford has said that the third year of production will serve original applicants who have been placed on a waiting list, while the fourth (and for now, final) year will be dedicated to deferrers and those who didn’t apply first time round.

Be warned though: those who applied and missed the cut last month will “need to update their request.” So make a note on the calendar before you forget.

“Ford GT has racing in its blood,” says executive vice president Raj Nair. “The road car and race car will live on, side-by-side, for the next four years – providing ample opportunity to test and prove innovative new technologies both on and off the track.”
