ASEAN NCAP hands 5-star safety certification to Perodua Myvi

Myvi

Earlier today Perodua was officially presented with its certification of the full 5-star safety rating by ASEAN NCAP (New Car Assessment Programme). Of course, this was just a formality as this little nugget was already announced during the car’s launch not long ago.

It’s still is a remarkable report to look at, again. We know that this is not the Myvi as we know it, as in the safety aspects have been amped a few times over. Second, the ASEAN NCAP testing protocol 2017-2020 is a bit tougher than last.

The test was done at JARI (Japan Automobile Research Institute) one of the optional sites when the facility in Malaysia is not utilised for whatever reason.

For adult occupant protection (AOP), the new Myvi receives a total score of 32.71, with a 1.3G test car variant that comes with airbags for driver, passenger and side. For Child Occupant Protection (COP), the total score is 43.14.

Our main focus was for the Safety Assist benchmark, which was rated to be 15.00 from a perfect score of 18.00. Note that the 1.3G is not even the top-spec Myvi, but comes with seatbelt reminders at every buckle point, ESC, and AEB City, or Autonomous Emergency Braking. NCAP splits AEB to AEB City and AEB Inter-Urban; since the Myvi only comes with the former, autonomous braking to avoid potential collision only happens at lower speeds. But that is enough to help with scoring. The only component would make the score perfect would be Blind Spot Technology which is absent in all variants.

In the report, ASEAN NCAP again recognises the fact that the new Myvi is the most affordable car with AEB feature in Malaysia.

Also revealed to have undergone the ASEAN NCAP crash test is the 1.5-litre Toyota Vios. It’s got 7 airbags and is larger than the Myvi hatchback. But interestingly it loses out to the Myvi in every aspect: AOP is 32.19, COP is 42.44, while Safety Assist is 11.00. This gives an overall score of 81.63 compared to the Myvi’s 88.27.

Why stop at just the Vios? However, since the 2017-2020 test protocol still has a short list of graduates, there is only one other vehicle that the new Myvi can be compared to – the 2017 Honda CR-V. Yes, it’s way off from the Perodua in almost every sense but the ASEAN NCAP overall score suggests it’s not worlds apart. The Honda CR-V gets a total score of 88.80.
