Things you need to know about the new Volvo XC90

- Though it has been introduced in the market since 2002, this is the second generation of the model. Which means, the first generation XC90 has been roaming the planet for more than ten years.

- The Volvo XC90 is one of Volvo's best selling model worldwide.

- The first generation XC-90 is still being built in China. There are rumours saying Proton is interested in that platform.

- The new XC90 is built on a completely new global platform - Scalable Product Architecture or SPA

- Currently, there is only one powertrain option for the new XC90 in Malaysia - the T8 Twin Engine with Plug-In Hybrid, mated to a 8-speed automatic transmission powering all four wheels

- The T8 Twin Engine is an inline-4, 1,969 cc 16-valve aluminium block and head with a super charger and turbocharger bolted to it, able to gulp in 95-98 RON petrol.

- The front wheels are powered by the engine while the rear wheels are driven by a 87 hp/240 Nm electric motor which gets its juice from a 9.2-kWh lithium-ion battery pack, located in the centre tunnel.

- You need 3.5 hours to fully charge the battery via the normal home socket. On battery alone, the range is 43 km.

- The whole drivetrain provides 407 hp and 640 Nm of torque - amazing from a 2-liter engine!

- The new XC-90 weighs 2,343 kg (kerb) but 0-100 kph is in 5.6 seconds and top speed is 230 kph

- The new XC-90 has a ridiculously small fuel tank - 50 litres. Then again, it has a claimed fuel consumption figures of 2.1L/100km (combined)

- The new XC-90 has the world's first Run-off road protection, where the computer detects the car has left the road, tightens up the front safety belts and keep them tightened as long as the vehicle is in motion. In the same package are the Lane Keeping Aid, Driver Alert Control and the Rest Stop Guidance.

- The other world's first is Auto brake at intersections, where the XC-90 can automatically brakes the car and comes to a complete halt if the driver turns in front of an oncoming car.

- The XC-90 comes standard with a portable charging kit which you can plug it into a wall socket. However so, Volvo Car Malaysia will provide you with a one-time free inspection by its partner, Hager, to check whether the socket can be used for charging the SUV or not.

- Volvo Car Malaysia has announced its plans to assemble the hybrid in its plant in Shah Alam in the third quarter of next year. They also have plans to export it to Thailand, Indonesia and other Asean countries, with plans to use up to 40 per cent of local content.

- Due to that, the new XC-90 gets a the EEV tax incentive, allowing it to be priced at RM453,888 OTR excluding insurance. Comparing it with the BMW X5 or the Audi Q7, the Volvo is at least RM100,000 cheaper.

- Volvo Car Malaysia has used up all of it 100 units quota to import in the new XC-90 and all have been booked for. If you are interested, you have to wait for the CKD unit, and the price for that has yet to be confirmed.
