Look, everyone! It’s another new small SUV. This one’s a Seat. It’s called the Arona, and we’re assured it’s very interesting indeed.

Based on the same MQB A0 platform as the new Ibiza, the Arona is 79mm longer and 99mm taller than that car. You sit higher, the windscreen is steeper of rake and the suspension has been raised by 15mm. Because SUV.

Engines are shared with the Ibiza too – that means petrol engines with three-and four cylinders, and four-cylinder diesels. Manual and DSG auto gearboxes are variously available, although there’s no mention of all-wheel drive. No figures yet, but quickest (until the possible Cupra) will be the 150bhp four-cylinder petrol, which comes with cylinder deactivation technology and will only be paired with sporty FR trim. It should be quite quick among its very sensible rivals, Nismo Juke excluded.

Meanwhile, the safety and infotainment tech on offer is well-proven. There’s adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, autonomous emergency braking and loads besides. Inside there’s much connectivity, all routed through an 8in touchscreen running CarPlay, Android Auto and Mirror Link.

The Arona, which makes its public debut at September’s Frankfurt motor show, will be Seat’s smallest SUV. It’ll sit below the Ateca and an as-yet unnamed, Kodiaq-like SUV that’s set to be released next year.
