Ever heard of OSAC (Overseas Security Advisory Council)? If not, we’ll have you know that this is a body that was created to promote security cooperation between American private sector interests worldwide and the U.S. State Department.

According to the Crime and Safety Report they published back in March 2017, Malaysia’s state of road safety is described as ‘a significant concern’. With over 7,150 traffic fatalities in 2016 (or 19.5 per day), the Malaysia is among the top 20 most dangerous countries in the world in terms of operating a vehicle.

Motorcyclists are singled out to be a large part of the problem, with their weaving in between traffic as a hazard for other drivers and pedestrians. They also tend to use on-coming traffic lanes and run through traffic lights.

Other observations made by the report include:

1. Malaysian driving norms are difficult to understand.

2. Reports of road rage are increasing.

3. Street flooding can occur quickly during the monsoon season due to drainage issues and lagging infrastructure.

4. A special mention is given to long-distance tour buses where accidents that result in fatalities or serious injuries have happened. The advise is to choose a reputable bus company and avoid overnight routes.

5. Taxi drivers, particularly at tourist areas, tend to not use the fare meter. Drivers in Kuala Lumpur are also noted to have been involved or complicit in violent crimes against foreign tourists and locals alike.

6. Single women travelers are advised against hailing cabs, but rather to book them at shopping areas using a phone.
