Race car for sale: the Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport MR

1

Not long after finally making its official appearance in Asia, Sime Darby Auto Performance has ‘launched’ the made-for-racing Cayman GT4 Clubsport MR here in Malaysia.

The Cayman GT4 Clubsport is powered by a 3.8-litre flat-six engine that generates 380bhp. The racing version features the 6-speed PDK transmission with shift paddles on the steering wheel and a mechanical rear-axle locking differential. The spring-strut front suspension is taken from its larger 911 GT3 Cup brother.

The impressive racing brake system is fitted with steel brake discs all round measuring 380-millimetre in diameter. Tipping the scales at just 1,300 kilograms, the Cayman GT4 Clubsport, delivered ex-works with a welded-in safety cage, a racing bucket seat as well as a six-point harness, is truly lightweight.

The purpose of the GT4 Clubsport is to close the gap between the hardcore road-legal models (the GT3 RS comes to mind) and the race-only GT3 Cup. Adding to this is the growing popularity of GT4-class racing throughout the world, in particular this slice of the map.

A difference between this machine over the regular GT4 Clubsport involves the upgrades by Manthey Racing (hence the MR designation).

We’d mention the price but as a matter of principal (for the lack of a better word) Porsche does not sell this car for those who would only keep it hidden in their garage, serving nothing more than as a symbol of their wealth/taste. Having said that, four race teams have already confirmed their participation using the GT4 Clubsport.

[Okay, here’s a simple breakdown of the car’s price: base car is roughly 150,000 Euros. But for racing, there are plenty to add which all swells the final price. That includes (among others) the rear wing, lift system, fire suppression, racing seat, fuel cell, etc. By the time you're done, you’re looking at the painful end of another five figures, at least]
