‘Op Selamat 2017’ a success: IGP

The Royal Malaysia Police has declared ‘Op Selamat 2017’ that was recently conducted during the Hari Raya holiday period as a success following a drop in the number of road deaths. The Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar announced that during the 15-day operation, the number of fatal accidents totalled 239 cases compared to 273 cases in the same period last year. This translates to a 12 per cent drop.

“The number of deaths also dropped by 42 cases or 14 per cent, with 257 deaths recorded this year, compared to 299 last year," Khalid said.

From the 6,309 operations that were carried out during ‘Op Selamat 2017’, the police also issued 277,832 summonses.

Based on analysis conducted, self-destructive factors were the main cause of accidents, namely 65 cases, in addition to other causes such as negligence and carelessness.

On another note, the IGP also said the burglary cases also dropped from 794 cases to 629, representing a decrease of 21 per cent.
