Two New Yamaha Offerings Debut

By thoriq, 28 January 2019

The brand that promises to ‘Revs Your Heart’ kicked things into high gear last weekend by debuting two new models during its annual Chinese New Year gala in Genting Highlands.

We’re talking about Yamaha and its local arm – Hong Leong Yamaha Motor (HLYM) – of course. The firm expands its big bike line up by adding in the new Yamaha Tracer 900 GT and much-hyped about new Yamaha YZF-R25.

Here’s what you ought to know about both when you can expect to see them hitting authorised Yamaha dealer floors nationwide.

Yamaha Tracer 900 GT

We begin with HLYM’s latest flagship, the Tracer 900 GT. Yamaha says this is an ‘evolution’ of the MT-09 Tracer that it underpins, sporting a host of revamps and enhancements all round to make it a top-flight middleweight sport touring machine.

The CP3 847cc in-line triple-cylinder heart remains, churning out impressive figures of 115hp and 87.5Nm. Both are sent to the rear wheel through a six-speed box and chain drive setup, with this GT benefitting with a new Quick Shift system to boot too.

Elsewhere, there’s a new and larger adjustable windscreen, a brand new TFT digital instrument panel, fully adjustable suspension all around, selectable ride modes, as well as full-LED lighting all around too.

Unlike its MT-09 Tracer, the new Tracer 900 GT also benefits with a fully revised rear swingarm design, which has become 60mm longer and allow more weight to be put up front. Besides that comes a 30mm narrower handlebar set, as well as comfort seats and 30mm longer pillion footpegs for increased comfort.

By the way, the aforementioned selectable ride modes comes courtesy of a ride-by-wire throttle system in place, which also ties up with the ABS and Traction Control systems present on board, giving riders greater flexibility and versatility.

Available in Grey or Matt Blue paint options, the new Yamaha Tracer 900 GT sport touring goes on sale locally starting February onwards, commanding a base retail price of RM58,888.

Yamaha YZF-R25

Besides launching the new Tracer 900 GT, HLYM also chose to preview the much hyped about all-new Yamaha YZF-R25. This quarter-litre up start supersport is poised to continue the success of its predecessor that has sold in the thousands since its debut in 2014.

With this new 2019 model, the R25 gets a much sharper and sportier styling, featuring cues and lines inspired by its middleweight YZF-R6 supersport and flagship YZF-R1 superbike siblings. Completing the looks is a set of aggressively styled full-LED lights front and aft too, not forgetting a neatly updated LCD instrument display.

While both the chassis and powertrain are carried over from the outgoing model, there’s a set of new upsidedown (USD) front forks to marvel in, promising enhanced handling and control.

The 249cc parallel-twin heart, on the other hand, has also gained minor upgrades, producing 35.5hp and 22.6Nm of twist. Yamaha claims this, plus the light 166kg (wet) weight the new R25 boasts, sees an 8kph increase in top speed.

No official price was revealed, but HLYM says it will be announced shortly before it’s slated to go on sale nationwide in March. This quarter-litre sport will come in two colour choices, namely Metallic Blue and Matt Red.
