This Urus is made for racing

Lamborghini Urus ST-X Concept

No one will blame you for any face palms upon reading this – Lamborghini has revealed the Urus ST-X Concept. It’s an Urus that looks a bit angry for the simple reason that it has stickers all over it. Lamborghini – or rather their racing division Squadra Corse – sees this as the racing version of the Super SUV, conceived for a one-make championship.

But there’s brilliance to this madness because this one-make race series will use the sticky parts of a racing circuit, and go off-road too. Ever seen rally-x? Yup, that’s the idea.

Lamborghini says that the racing will begin in 2020 in Europe and the Middle East on FIA-approved racing circuits that for obvious reasons need to be specially prepared. An arrive-and-drive formula is on the menu, and I personally think this sort of format where big slides will be liberally applied will please even more gentleman racers.

The Urus ST-X Concept will use the motorsport know-how of Squadra Corse to mechanically optimise its package, complete with FIA-mandated safety equipment that includes roll cage, fire suppression system, and FT3 fuel tank.

The hood will be carbon fibre, the air intakes will be larger (to help cool that twin-turbo V8 better), there’s a larger rear spoiler, and those aluminium 21-inch alloys will be secured to the axle with just a single nut, typical race car style.

Basically, the ST-X Concept is 25 per cent lighter compared to a showroom Urus and thanks to the roll cage will come with even more torsional stiffness. We will see the actual car a year from now.
