With a total of nine variants of the new Ford Ranger, there is probably something for anyone interested in a modern pick-up truck. And by modern, this also mean trucks that are equally suitable for the constantly-connected urban executive as it is for an outdoorsman. After all, was it not the Ranger which formed one of the pioneers for the term ‘lifestyle pickup’?

Out of the nine which was driven into the event hall earlier today, one was there as a preview – the mighty Ranger Raptor. This is one will only be officially launched into the Malaysian market during the upcoming KLIMS. You may already know the specs, but not the price. What’s a few more weeks, right?

That leaves eight, and five of them – the 2.2L XL manual 4x4, 2.2L XL automatic 4x4, 2.2L XL manual 4x4 (single cab), 2.2L XLT manual 4x4, and 2.2L XLT automatic 4x4 – all use the same Puma-class  2,198 Duratorq engine that makes 160ps and 385Nm. The manual gearbox is a 6-speed, with the same amount of forward ratio for the automatic.

It still is quite advanced, with electric steering, ESC, Hill Descent Control, Hill Launch Assist, Trailer Sway Control, Rollover Mitigation, and Adaptive Load Control all standard features. The XLT variant only comes with the old SYNC feature, though; while the XL omits connectivity altogether.

Prices for the XL starts from RM90,888 while the XLT starts from RM109,888.

It’s the other three which are ultimately more interesting to talk about. The new Panther-class engine loses in terms of displacement but enjoys more power and efficiency. The 2.0L XLT+ 4x4, 2.0L Wildtrak 4x2, and 2.0L Wildtrak 4x4 has the same engine with 1,996cc of capacity, only difference being it complemented by a single turbo (for the XLT+), and the Wildtrak variants with bi-turbo. The latter is also the same engine fitted in the Raptor, but that’s getting ahead of ourselves.

Time for a table, then!
