Mountune has given the Golf GTI 87 more horsepowers

Eight pounds and twenty-two pence per horsepower. That’s how much it’ll cost you to fit Mountune’s new 87bhp Stage 1 ECU upgrade for the Mk7.5 VW Golf GTI.

We say Mountune, the Essex-based fast Ford specialists have teamed up with wheel makers fifteen52 to start ‘m52’ – a new company that’ll solely focus on Volkswagen Group cars. Its first effort was a 360bhp Golf R earlier this year, and now GTI owners can get involved too.

As well as 306bhp, the re-tune provides 125Nm of extra torque – bringing the GTI’s total figure to a nice round 475Nm from its 2.0-litre turbo four-pot. The extra grunt also drops the 0-100kph time from 6.4 to 5.4 seconds. Lovely.

m52 says that customers can fit the mTune handset in the comfort of their own driveway and that no other upgrades need to be made to the standard GTI – although those wheels are rather lovely, aren’t they?

There are five calibrations to choose from once you’ve fitted the £715.50 (approx. RM3,843) RM part – stock, high torque, low torque, valet and anti-theft – the last of which completely immobilises the car when you’re not with it.

So, what do you reckon people? Would you be reaching for that spare change tin if you owned a GTI?
