More fancy license plates coming up! The Road Transport Department (JPJ lah, guys) will open the bidding for special ‘Malaysia’ registration numbers starting from 2 July to 16 July 2018. The new special plates are also to celebrate the 61st Merdeka Day celebrations. According to minister of transport, Anthony Loke, the results will be announced on 23 August, comprising of Malaysia 1 to Malaysia 9999 plates.

There will be no minimum bid and the bidding is open for everyone, so you’ll get your chance to get in a bidding war with Mat Sabu, for instance. Only PM Tun Mahathir will be offered the number ‘Malaysia 2020’. Bidding for the special plates can be made at any state RTD office.

In addition, the individual states will also get their own special plates. The first being Perlis, although there was no suggestion when this will start. If that’s not enough, the ministry is also studying a proposal to introduce personalised plate numbers, including using a person’s name. This, of course, has been the dream of all Malaysian for a long time.

Why the sudden generosity? Well, money. "Our objective is to increase the government's income. So, there will be no number reserved for anyone (including ministers), anyone can bid for them. There is no minimum bid," the minister commented.

You may remember the V and F plate numbers before, and each generated a sales figure of RM22.48 million and RM17.55 million respectively. The top picks V1 went for RM989,780 while F1 was sold for RM836,660.
