There’s still about a month to go before Malaysians can start a conversation with their car by saying “Hi, Proton”. But the wait is over for the more affluent crowd as a similar system is now on sale in Mercedes-Benz showrooms nationwide.

We’re talking about the fourth-generation A-Class and its highlight feature, MBUX. The premium hatchback was launched today in A200 Progressive Line and A250 AMG Line guises, both equipped with the highly intelligent multimedia system that comes to your beck and call at the sound of “Hey, Mercedes”.

The new A-Class is equipped with a pair of brand new engines to complement its on-board gadgetry. The A200 is now powered by a 1.3-litre four-pot turbo good for 163bhp and 250Nm of torque – that’s 7bhp more than the outgoing 1.6-litre mill. This output is good for an eight-second century sprint and a top speed of 225kph. The new engine also features cylinder deactivation tech for better fuel efficiency (5.6l/100km rated consumption).

2.0 continues to be the A250’s capacity of choice, but there’s a new engine with Conicshape technology producing 224bhp and 350Nm of torque. With performance figures of 6.2 seconds (to 100kph) and 250kph vmax, the A250 is the thoroughly quicker car which should satiate your need for speed until a proper AMG model lands on our shores.

Both engines are mated to a 7G-DCT transmission that delivers powers exclusively to the front wheels.

Other noteworthy features that are standard across the range include a lowered comfort suspension, LED headlights, Thermatic auto climate control, Dynamic Select, Active Brake Assist, Active Park Assist and cruise control with Speedtronic speed limiter.

Being an AMG Line model, the A250 packs bigger 18-inch alloys, AMG Line exterior kit and even a sportier cabin (versus the A200’s open pore wood interior trim as part of the Progressive Line package).

The A200 Progressive Line kicks things off at RM227,888 while the A250 AMG Line tops the range at RM263,888.
