When he isn’t setting outright records at Pikes Peak in purpose-built, all-electric Volkswagen prototypes, or racing Porsches at Spa or Le Mans, Romain Dumas enjoys a spot of rallying. And who wouldn’t, when they’ve got something like this to drive. It’s the Porsche Cayman R-GT, and Dumas says he’s taking it to Rally Germany later this month. Ooof.

Go watch this video. Sounds tremendous, doesn’t it? Details are scant, but odds are the R-GT will compete in the FIA’s R-GT class, which permits rear-wheel drive and features such cars as the Porsche 911 and Abarth 124. From the noise we gather it retains the GT4’s 3.8-litre N/A, 911-derived flat-six, no doubt coupled to a rally-ready gearbox, brakes, suspension and so-on. No word on power or performance yet, but bank on lots and much.

Dumas and his engineering firm RD Limited have been developing the car since mid-August, with the intention of taking it to Rally Germany on August 16th.

Porsche is teasingly hinting at something us mere mortals might be able to buy, too. “The Cayman GT4 Clubsport is just a concept car for rallies. At the German round of WRC we will collect feedback from the rally scene. The decision on if a similar car based on a future model could be developed will be made later in the year.”

Go to rally Germany and cheer Romain extra loudly, then, and the 718 Cayman GT4 might just be sold with a rally version. Get saving. It won’t be cheap…
