Can 'smart drones' help fix potholes in Selangor?

The state government has already begun using drones to detect road damage

The future has arrived, and hopefully, it includes having no potholes or road damages. Well, that's at least what the Selangor state government has in mind. It seems that they will be making full use of the Smart Road Asset Management System (SRAMS) to streamline the process of monitoring, identifying, and fixing road damages.

According to a post by the Selangor Journal, the tech or system was developed by Selgem Sdn Bhd which combines 'artificial intelligence, detection, and light expansion' to basically detect any road damages. And it's being done via the use of smart drones and 360-degree cameras. Yup.

To streamline all processes, the system also supports the application reporting potholes in roads (IRS) created by the Smart Selangor Delivery Unit. This is where members of the public can file their own complaints together with photos, just in case the drones and cameras missed anything.

According to Selangor's MB, Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari, "Through this system, users can not only file reports on a road’s quality and the shape of the ground’s surface but also include other accessories such as lights, traffic lights, and road dividers. The system is very efficient, hence why we requested it be combined with IRS, whereas before reports were made by the public on the Waze system."
