The Ferrari Portofino has been officially launched in Malaysia earlier today, the V8-powered gran turismo which was first introduced to the international stage at the Frankfurt International Motor Show in September 2017. It’s also the most powerful convertible GT that Ferrari has ever produced, something which may sound intimidating for new Ferrari customers – the very kind of buyers Ferrari hope to secure, a role previously held by the California which it replaces – but the 600ps it makes (or 591hp) is manageable. Sure, its savage, when instructed.

Power comes from a wet-sump 3.9-litre twin turbo V8 mounted on top of the front axle. It’s a tweaked version of 2016 and 2017’s Engine of the Year winner, with 760Nm of torque in between 3,000 and 5,250rpm. The 7-speed twin clutch transmission allows for 0-100kph acceleration of just 3.5 seconds, and 0-200kph in 10.8 seconds.

Also impressive is the 34 metres needed to completely stop the car from 100kph, yet another benefit of a lighter car (dry weight of 1,545kg, 80kg off the California).

Light it may be, but Ferrari maintained a hard-top in order to maintain a genuine Berlinetta coupe profile. It features an all-new design and mechanism that will close or open in 14 seconds at speeds up to 40kph.

This gives the obvious wind-in-your-hair experience (hair not provided), at the same time allowing you the full aural assault from the V8 up front and newly designed exhaust system at the back. It’s quite something too, with a deliberate objective in delivering, in Ferrari’s own words, ‘the unique Ferrari sound.’

The dashboard is sleek and simple with most buttons usually found in other cars now embedded in the 10.2 inch touchscreen. That or the new steering wheel, which happens to be the first Ferrari in the GT class that comes with EPS (Electric Power Steering). And you don’t really appreciate just how convenient it is to have the lane change indicator switches right on the steering until you actually get a chance to use it. Apart from that, the seats are all-new as well that is lighter and designed for added comfort.
