Watch Vaughn Gittin Jnr. attempt to drift the Nürburgring

By topgear, 26 September 2018

Drifting is usually banned at the Nürburgring. Sensible idea, actually. The internet hosts a trillion crashy videos to demonstrate why exuberant behaviour is not advisable on the Nordschleife. So, if you’re a champion drifter with special permission to slew sideways around the entire 21-kilometre circuit, it’s not an opportunity to pass up.

Trust Vaughn Gittin Jnr. to made the most of it. He’s slid his 900bhp RTR Mustang around the Green Hell, chewing three sets of rear tyres in the process. It’s by no means the fastest lap of the Ring you’ll see – some of it is spent going backwards – but it’s certainly one of the more balletic.

Thing is, Gittin’s people claim this is “the first time the feat [drifting the entire Nürburgring] has been accomplished”. Hmmm. Have they not heard of Faszination, the legendary on-board of Ruf test driver Stefan Roser attacking the circuit in the CTR ‘Yellowbird’, from way back in 1989? That thing was even more wayward than the ‘Stang, and by no means set-up for the task. We’ve added the original clip above for you to compare…

Gittin Jnr. said of his attempt, “One of the craziest parts of the video is the jump on Pflanzgarten. The speed of that entire section was intense and immediately upon landing I had to flick the car hard sideways to slow down to make the sharp right-hander. There was zero margin for error. Damn that was crazy.”

Crazy indeed. Where should the drifters conquer next?
