Autoliv will debut latest advanced research vehicle at CES

Autoliv LIV

Autoliv, a leading third party automotive safety system company, will unveil its Learning Intelligent Vehicle (LIV) 2.0 at the upcoming CES 2018. If you guessed that this is another smart autonomous vehicle, well you are right.

But LIV 2.0 goes further than that. There is a significant amount of Artificial Intelligence (AI) going on too, with a point to provide a real human/machine interaction that will help shape consumer acceptance of autonomous vehicle.

The system is a “5th occupant in the vehicle”, which takes input of a wide array of data not only driver and passenger instructions, but also their mood using sensors that track sound and hand movement. It’s more than just a voice in the sky (or rather, in the cabin. Think KITT), it is the vehicle itself that interacts with vehicle occupants and learning from the communication.

“You do not use your car like a smartphone, but rather, you put your physical safety in your vehicle’s hands, so shared control and two-way trust between human and machine are crucial for the development and adoption of autonomous vehicles," says Ola Bostrom, VP Research at Autoliv.

LIV’s core are a set of learning algorithms that among others sense driver’s gaze, drowsiness, hand position, posture and cognitive load before combining this data with external environment.

The LIV research platform was developed to answer questions such as how a smart car should interact with passengers who are occupied with other activities such as entertainment or other mobility experiences.

“LIV will help innovate ways to make cars equally as intelligent about what's going on in the interior of the cabin as they are about the road outside,” adds Bostrom.
