SuperTrofeo Sepang 8

Local driver Afiq Yazid does good again after finishing his Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo Asia Series championship weekend at Sepang with wins in both races. The young Malaysia who is a graduate of the Lamborghini Young Driver Programme is partnered by Japanese Toshiyuki Ochiai.

Sunday started in a rather difficult manner for the Malaysian-Japanese duo as they started the first race third on the grid due to a difficult session, 1.5 second behind pole starters Dilantha Malagamuwa and teammate Armaan Ebrahim. Zen Low and Max Wiser started second on the grid.

During race one, driver positioning saw some notable rearrangements from the grid lineup, with Dilantha and Armaan forfeiting pole to Yazid and Ochiai and slipping into second. Meanwhile Yudai Uchida from Japan and teammate Jono Lester from New Zealand, who started tenth on the grid, managed to climb all the way back up into third with a sterling performance. This was how it stayed until the checkered flag.

Qualifying for race two went much better for Yazid and Ochiai who lined up first on the grid followed by Dilantha and Armaan while Andrew Haryanto from Indonesia was third. There was a lot of jostling during the race start which luckily enough the pole sitter managed to stay out of. It was Uchida and Lester who was most aggressive; they managed to move up a few places from sixth.

After some time their car was up to second after overtaking Dilantha and Armaan. Yet, try as they might, the duo were unable to faze champions Yazid and Ochiai, who maintained their top spot all the way to the flag.

Next on the calendar is the Fuji International Speedway in Japan, which will be held from 17th to 18th September. This will be the final venue in Asia before the World Final in Valencia, scheduled on 3rd and 4th December 2016.
